Real Talk: when should I book newborn photos?

Pregnancy is a super exciting and busy time. Whether it’s your first or your fourth (or any other number), you have a lot going on in addition to trying to take care of yourself and your growing babe.

There’s a whole list of things to get done and I never want photos to be as stressful as getting on the waitlist for daycare, registering for all you need, or attempting to sleep when you’re super uncomfortable.

However, documenting this time is one of the most special things you can do. The newborn days are going to fly by, even if you see every hour on the clock overnight. I promise.

The good news is that sweet second trimester typically offers relief from morning sickness, an adorable baby bump, and increased motivation & energy to get some things done. THAT’S when you should reach out to me to start chatting about your newborn photos.

Planning Ahead: booking during your second trimester

Ideally, reaching out to me in your second trimester allows us plenty of time to chat, get to know each other, and for you to get the most out of your time with me.

Once your newborn session is booked, you’ll get updates, newborn session tips & other info from me along the way. I’ll be here if you have any questions. Questions about what to wear, how to prep your house, how to prep big sibs for photos, or even if you want my opinion on baby gear or juggling multiples!

Booking at this point also means your due date is more likely to be available on my calendar and you have increased flexibility for payment plans if you’d find that helpful.

Lifestyle At-Home Newborn Photography is flexible!

Because I specialize in lifestyle at-home newborn photography, it’s not super urgent that we get newborn photos in asap after delivery. I’ll be the first to tell you that these babies change SUPER quickly, so I’m always happy to take photos right away (or add a fresh48 session) to capture every little big of their rapidly changing sweetness.

Baby acne, hair loss, and more awake (potentially fussy) time are other reasons to get your newborn session in during those first couple of weeks.

If you personally want more time to recover post-delivery, time for big sibs to settle in, or for baby to be more alert with more eye contact or even smiling, I consider any sessions up to 3-months of age to be “newborn sessions.” This is why it’s not too late to book newborn photos even if baby is already here.

We’re going to capture your family exactly as you are

The whole point of these sessions is to capture your entire family in this season. Yes, I’ll focus on the new baby and you’ll get all of the adorable detail shots, but we’ll also document the heart of your entire family in this moment.

Snuggling, reading together, coloring, big kids scootering or biking or playing soccer while you snuggle babe – if it’s true to this season, I want to document it. One day that tiny babe will be running around with his big brothers and you’ll ache to remember the feeling of him on your chest while you watched “the bigs” play.
